DETROIT IS INSOLVENT. DAMN THOSE...ER, REPUBLICANS?

Ken Berwitz

Excerpted from Mark Steyn's latest column, which talks about the Detroit going bankrupt:

...40 percent of its streetlamps don't work; 210 of its 317 public parks have been permanently closed; it takes an hour for police to respond to a 9-1-1 call; only a third of its ambulances are driveable; one-third of the city has been abandoned; the local realtor offers houses on sale for a buck and still finds no takers...

In my book After America, I observe that the physical decay of Detroit - the vacant and derelict lots for block after block after block - is as nothing compared to the decay of the city's human capital. Forty-seven percent of adults are functionally illiterate, which is about the same rate as the Central African Republic, which at least has the excuse that it was ruled throughout the Seventies by a cannibal emperor. Why would any genuine innovator open a business in a Detroit "innovation hub"? Whom would you employ? The illiterates include a recent president of the school board, Otis Mathis, which doesn't bode well for the potential work force a decade hence.

Given their respective starting points, one has to conclude that Detroit's Democratic party makes a far more comprehensive wrecking crew than Emperor Bokassa ever did. No bombs, no invasions, no civil war, just "liberal" "progressive" politics day in, day out.

I guess it must be Detroit's Republican Mayor, and Republican-dominated city council.

What's that, you say?  Detroit has not had a Republican Mayor in over 50 years  It has had exactly one Republican city council member since 1970.  Every appointive position has been held by Democrats for decades.  So how is it possible that anyone could conceivably blame the downfall of this once-great, once-prosperous city on Republicans?

In answer, let me show you what two great "progressive" thinkers of our time have to say.

First we have that brilliant philosopher, MSNBC's Ed Schultz.  Here are excerpts of his wit and wisdom:

Rick Snyder will not invest a dime to help the people of Detroit. Instead, he wants to spend money to destroy the city. This is the beginning of privatization, my friend. You call in your local buddies when it comes to the construction and have all those local bulldozers knock it down, with federal money I would imagine. He wants to bring in bulldozers and knock down great parts of an American city, destroy a tradition, and kind of start all over with privatization. Make no mistake - Detroit, like every other city in this country, I believe this exemplifies just how great this country can be.

Let me bring it to you this way, folks. When you don't have a plan, that means you don't have any guts. Snyder has had no plan for the last three years for the city of Detroit, and now he is blaming everything? Oh, this has been 60 years in the making. I didn't hear that on the campaign trail.

Oh, just shove them down the toilet - and don't worry, they're just a bunch of Black folks anyway.

I'm going to give governor of Michigan the Ed plan. I'm going to save Detroit here in the next few minutes. And you know how I'm going to do it? I'm going to do it with federal dollars. You know why? Because we did it to Baghdad. We did it in Kandahar. We did some nation-building. We got to do some nation-building right here. And the first city on the map is going to be Detroit.

Translation:  It isn't the Democrats who have run Detroit virtually as a one-party city for decades and decades.  It is Governor Rick Snyder, who sees a city literally in rubble and wants to rebuild it.  Why didn't he campaign on the 60 years of decay in Detroit?  (Ironically, if he didn't, this is the one area of agreement I have with Mr. Schultz.)  Oh, and he's a racist.  And the way to rebuild Detroit and make it a viable functioning city is to pour federal dollars into it, just like Baghdad, Iraq.  Yep, that sure will get private enterprise moving again.

I'll wait for you to take a sedative before continuing.

Ok.  Feeling better now?  Then here is another explanation of Detroit - this time from Ed's remarkably insightful fellow MSNBCer, Melissa Harris-Perry:

We can talk about the microstory of Detroit, but it seems to me that Detroit, as always, is standing for all kinds of things about America. In the case of Detroit, the reason that the tax base has become so small is because a loss of population, right? So folks out, they are not there to pay the taxes on the homes and the kind of deterioration is what you see in the numbers you've suggested.

But this lack of tax base is also exactly the kind of thing that many Republicans would impose on us, even when our cities have sufficient populations, even when our communities have sufficient populations. This is what it looks like when government is small enough to drown in your bathtub, and it is not a pretty picture.

Ahhh, we see.  Detroit's problem is that there is not enough government involvement.  Heck, everyone knows how hands-off Detroit's all-Democrat government always has been.  This has all been brought on the city by those rascally Republicans  - the ones who have not gotten a whiff of power in Detroit since the 1960's.

Incidentally, Ms. Harris-Perry, there are people there to pay the taxes on homes.  They're just not doing it.  Last year, 47% of the homeowners in Detroit did not pay those taxes.  I guess they were all Republicans too.

I'll stop writing now, on the theory that you can't take any more of this, and probably need another sedative.

If so, I can't say that I blame you.  But don't blame my blog.  It's those damn Detroit Republicans.....

MEDIA BIAS ON ABORTION? NAAAAHHHH

Ken Berwitz

Just how biased are mainstream media when it comes to abortion?  How incredibly biased?

Read this excerpt from Lauren Enk's blog at newsbusters.org and see for yourself:

Remember the media blackout of the Gosnell trial? Earlier this year, Philadelphia late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell was convicted of three counts of murder - two of them delivering babies and then killing them in his filthy "house of horrors" clinic. He was also found guilty of more than 230 other felony and misdemeanor charges.

Pundits and journalists excused the media neglect, saying late term abortion was just too uncomfortable, the descriptions of the clinic too lurid, or dismissing it as a "local" issue. That's not how the broadcast networks have treated the pro-abortion crusade of Texas Democrat Wendy Davis.

In the 19 days since her June 25 filibuster, ABC, CBS and NBC have devoted 40 minutes, 48 seconds of their morning and evening news programs to stories including Davis. That's more than three times the 13 minutes 30 seconds they gave Gosnell during the entire 58 days of the murder trial.

Got it?  The trial of an absolute butcher and mass murderer is barely covered by the media.  But an obscure state senator who filibusters abortion legislation - resulting in it being held up, oh, maybe a week - gets more than three times as much coverage.

The inescapable conclusion?  Abortion is good.  Abortionists - even murderous butchers like gosnell (and, as I have blogged about previously, he is far from the only one - click here to read about a butcher from Davis's own state of Texas), are a protected species.  But a nondescript state politician who conducts a futile pro-abortion filibuster?  Make way for the camera crews!!  Hook up that remote feed!!  This is the BIGGIE!!!!!

Anyone who thinks media are not hopelessly compromised on this issue (and a disquieting number of others as well) is living in a dream world.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: THE SUSPENSIONS BEGIN

Ken Berwitz

The "Biogenesis" scandal's fallout has begun.

Ryan Braun, who, last year, told us he absolutely, positively never took an illegal substance, has been suspended for 65 games without pay - that's the rest of the season.

Braun now has apologized for his lies...by issuing a boilerplate statement every sports lawyer has on file.  In other words, his "apology" has all the sincerity of a Chanukah card from mahmoud ahmadinejad.

Can Alex Rodriguez be far behind?  How about the others who have been implicated in this scandal, which is so damaging to baseball?

My personal reaction?  GOOD.  I hope every one of them gets nailed.

May the powers that be cleanse this once-great game as best they can, and impose punishments that really might deter usage of the illegal substances which turn okay ballplayers into hall of famers, and likely hall of famers into cartoon characters (are you reading this, Barry Bonds?).

I wish them every success.

free` They need to go back to the days of beer, hotdogs and chewing tobacco in the dugout, instead of using these designer drugs. ;) (07/23/13)

THE "RACIST AND PROUD" PLANT

Ken Berwitz

Take a good look at this Associated Press picture.  It was taken in Houston this weekend, and is of a woman who apparently was one of the demonstrators who came out to counter the "Justice For Trayvon" rally.

racist proud plant

Not very pretty, is it?  Those damn racists!

Except....

...in reality, the "woman" you are looking at - her name is renee vaughan - was a plant.

vaughan is a hard-left activist who came to that counter-demonstration hoping to get her picture taken by media, so she could further her political agenda by making fools of as many people as possible - which, given that it was picked up by the Associated Press, she certainly succeeded in doing.

You can read all about this at Kristinn Taylor's blog for gatewaypundit.com.  Ms. Taylor has a lot more than I've shown you, so please do.

Now grow old waiting for mainstream media to report this fraud.

But hey, that's perfectly understandable, isn't it?  I mean, why would they let the public in on this, when it coincides so well with the narrative they have been pushing?

Put another way:  Operation Racial Firestorm is a resounding success so far.  Why spoil it?

MORE WEINER

Ken Berwitz

"I said that other texts and photos were likely to come out, and today they have":  Anthony Weiner, today.

I'll say this for Anthony Weiner:  he certainly must be proud of his genitals.  He apparently cannot stop himself from showing them to women he (presumably) has never met.

You'd think that, after resigning his congressional seat in disgrace two years ago, he would have put a cond..er, lid on things.  But they have again come to a head.

A web site called "The Dirty" (I won't put up a link, because I have been warned it has malicious spyware) has posted pictures that Mr. Weiner is alleged to have sent to a female, er, admirer, just last year, using the pseudonym "Carlos Danger".  And here is Mr. Weiner's reaction to this information being thrust in front of the public:

"As I have said in the past, these things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress. While some things that have been posted today are true and some are not, there is no question that what I did was wrong. This behavior is behind me. I've apologized to Huma and am grateful that she has worked through these issues with me and for her forgiveness. I want to again say that I am very sorry to anyone who was on the receiving end of these messages and the disruption that this has caused. As my wife and I have said, we are focused on moving forward."

Yeah, ok.  Very credible I'm sure.

Remember when then-Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter, during a Playboy interview, admitted that "I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times"?

When I read that, I knew he was a loser.  He wasn't even capable of lusting effectively.  The heart is the last place that you lust:  you either head north to fantasy, or south to reality.

And now, in his best Carteresque form, we have Anthony Weiner telling us that "this behavior is behind me".

Uh, no, Anthony...this behavior is very definitely in front of you.   Quite a few inches in front of you, if your pride in that body part is at all well founded.

Hey, I have an idea.  Why doesn't Client #9 - aka Eliot Spitzer, who is running to be city Comptroller - introduce Mr. Weiner to a couple of his former customers.  I'm sure they'd be more than a little interested in what he has to offer.  Then again maybe Spitzer did, and that is who Weiner was sending these new pictures to in the first place.

Well, at least there is a bit of a silver lining to this story:  it has expanded the horizons of NYC Council Speaker Christine Quinn, his lesbian primary opponent.  Now she finally has a reason to be interested in male genitalia.

Of course this could all be academic.  The new scandal might very well cause Mr. Weiner to drop out of the Mayoral race; even to leave town altogether.  But, personally, I doubt it.  Based on what I know about Anthony Weiner, I assume he'd rather stick it out in New York City.

One other thing:  What do you call the woman who blabbed about this to The Dirty?  A Weinersnitcher?

AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE

Ken Berwitz

As protests continue around the country demanding that, because of the Zimmerman verdict, Florida and other states should drop their "Stand Your Ground" laws, don't you find it an interesting coincidence that the neighborhood George Zimmerman was watching is called "The Retreat"?

Just asking.....

Incidentally, there is no truth to the rumor that William and Kate have settled on the name Trayvon.

RAHM EMANUEL AND GEORGE ZIMMERMAN

Ken Berwitz

Rahm Emanuel and George Zimmerman.  How's that for an odd couple?

Well, the left in this country has decided to fuse these two men together.  Let me explain how.

Rahm Emanuel - former Clinton inner circle member, then congressperon, currently Mayor of Chicago - has famously said "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste".

And countless members of the left, fully cognizant of Mr. Emanuel's admonition, are currently using the George Zimmerman verdict to try and remove "Stand Your Ground" (SYG) laws from the books in Florida and the 20 or so other states where they exist.

What does SYG have to do with George Zimmerman?  Nothing.  Neither Mr. Zimmerman's defense team nor the prosecution invoked it at any time during the trial.  So why is the trial being used to attack it?

Because the left hates Stand Your Ground, and sees this as an opportunity to build opposition to it, that's why.

That is why leftward commentators and politicians have added Stand Your Ground to their already thoroughly bogus narrative:  i.e. that George Zimmerman "stalked" Trayvon Martin, an innocent child doing nothing but going home with some candy and iced tea, then shot him for no reason other than that he was Black.

In reality:

-Zimmerman was not a "stalker", he was a neighborhood watch captain on patrol.

-Zimmerman has no history at all of racism.  A year and a half of investigating him turned up bone-dry.

-Zimmermen followed - not "stalked", but followed - Martin because, as he told the police dispatcher, Martin was acting suspiciously.

-Martin had just bought skittles and a drink.  But the drink was not iced tea, it was Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail - which is often combined with skittles and prescription cold medicine to create "lean" (also known as "drank" and "sizzurp"), popularized in rap culture as a quick high.

-After seeing Zimmerman following him, instead of heading to his father's girlfriend's home, Martin confronted Zimmerman and wound up on top of him beating his head into concrete.

-The shooting occurred during that beating.

Evidently, the theory is that, since they are lying about everything else, they might as well toss the hated "Stand Your Ground" in there too, and pretend it has something to do with the Zimmerman trial.  Hey, if it works, it works.

What a great strategy!  Mayor Emanuel must be proud as a peacock.

BOYCOTT DI$HONE$TY

Ken Berwitz

From an article by Jeff Tavss, for W, the ABC affiliate in Miami:

Despite reports that both Jay Z and Justin Timberlake have joined a Florida boycott over the state's "Stand Your Ground" law, organizers of the duo's concert at Sun Life Stadium on August 16 insist that the show will go on.

Many popular entertainers have joined Stevie Wonder since the Grammy-award winning singer announced last week that he would not play in Florida until the state overturned the controversial law that allows residents to defend their property without an attempt to retreat.

An executive affiliated with the "Legends of the Summer" tour says that the stop in South Florida will go as planned. The concert at Sun Life Stadium is scheduled to be the final stop on the tour.

Just dripping with sincerity, aren't they?

Or, as Jay Z rapped to Beyonce, "I'll get you the effin' money, before I effin' boycott, honey"
