MEET THE PRESS: A HARBINGER OF CONTINUED MEDIA BIAS ABOUT TRAYVON MARTIN?

Ken Berwitz

Meet The Press is on as I type this.  Not surprisingly, they are talking about Trayvon Martin.

And guess what picture of Trayvon Martin host David Gregory chose to show?  Why that sweet, angelic little "tween" picture of Trayvon when he was maybe 12 or 13 years old.  Not the 17 year old young adult that George Zimmerman saw, but this:

Trayvon Martin

And who did Gregory have on the show?  Why al sharpton, of course, who is not just a show host for NBC's hard-left MSNBC network, but a spokesperson and activist for the Martin family.

And what did sharpton tell us?  That nowhere in the trial did anyone show that Trayvon Martin did a thing wrong.  (Evidently physically being on top of George Zimmerman, and beating him so that his nose was broken and his head lacerated and bleeding - as proven by the eyewitness testimony and Zimmerman's injuries - somehow doesn't count).

If this is any indication of how media are going to treat the Trayvon Martin story post-acquittal (and I'm betting it is), you can expect plenty more of the same.

This is JOURNALISM?  These are JOURNALISTS?

God help us.

THE WHITE HOUSE STATEMENT

Ken Berwitz

Here is President Obama's statement regarding the George Zimmerman verdict...in rust, with my comments in blue:

The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy.  So far so good.

Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America.  Now we're in trouble.  The tragedy was not exclusively Trayvon Martin's, it was George Zimmerman's as well.

I know this case has elicited strong passions.  And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher.  But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken.  How I wish you had stopped right there.  But, of course, you didn't.

I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son.  And what about George Zimmerman?  He has gone through hell for the last year and a half because he defended himself from someone sitting on top of him beating his head into a concrete sidewalk, and will fear for his life every day from now on.  I notice that you have not one word of sympathy for his situation, only Trayvon Martin's.  You pretend to talk for all of us, but then make it 100% clear you do not.

And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities.  Standard-issue blather.  Keep going.

We should ask ourselves if we're doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis.  Ahh, I see.  It isn't the physical violence visited on George Zimmerman by Trayvon Martin that we should worry about, it is the fact that it was Zimmerman's good fortune to be carrying his legally-owned gun at the time.  You don't give a damn about George Zimmerman, do you?

We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this.  As citizens, that's a job for all of us.  At least you ended well -- oh wait, there's more.

That's the way to honor Trayvon Martin.  Trayvon Martin?  You want us to honor the person who was administering that beating to George Zimmerman as if he were some kind of hero-saint?  No thanks.  This again proves that your statement is not one of conciliation, it is a love song to Trayvon Martin and an attack on George Zimmerman.

There was a trial, Mr. President.  Both sides presented their cases.  And a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty.  Got that?  NOT GUILTY.

You pay lip service to the verdict by saying "a jury has spoken".  But you clearly have no respect for that jury and its decision, or you would not be issuing this statement of pseudo-conciliation which, in reality, is an ugly, inflammatory, one-sided attack on George Zimmerman.

Earlier I noted that Zimmerman will fear for his life from now on.  Who will he fear?  People who buy into what YOU are saying about this trial, that's who.

But, then again, if you had a son he would look like Trayvon Martin, not George Zimmerman right?  In the end, that is all you care about.

Are there still any people left who believe the claim that, as President, Barack Obama will bring us together?

I pity every one of them.

THE ZIMMERMAN VERDICT: RANDOM THOUGHTS

Ken Berwitz

Here, in no particular order, are a number of random thoughts about the acquital of George Zimmerman and what I think may happen next.

The jury's decision makes complete sense.  Even if you believe George Zimmerman was exactly the cop-wannabe prosecutors painted him as, there is no way to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he acted in any way but self defense.  What little there were in the way of eye witnesses corroborated Zimmerman's account, as did the fact that he had head injuries, front and back.

The four minute lapse between the end of Trayvon Martin's cell phone conversation with Rachel Jeantel, and the 911 calls, made it clear that Martin had far more than enough time to walk - not run, not trot, not even walk fast, but casually stroll - to his father's girlfriend's home. This destroyed the prosecution's contention that Zimmerman was stalking Martin as he tried to get away.

The inference that George Zimmerman was a racist, profiling Trayvon Martin based on his skin color, was a non-starter.  The prosecution had 17 months to dig up evidence of Zimmerman's racism, and - as shown by its absence in the trial - couldn't come up with any.

I know the defense, certainly in its summation, tried to convince jurors that the trial wasn't about race.  But I am just as certain that every juror, and every non-juror, knows that is exactly what this case was about.  If it were a Black-on Black, Latino-on-Latino or White-on-White case, and no charges were filed because the police investigation determined Zimmerman had probable cause, would anyone (other than maybe immediate family members) have made a stink over it?

The only reason this went any further was that a combination of race hustlers like al sharpton, Black hate groups like the new black panther party, and media eager to prove themselves to the sharptons and new black panthers of the world, turned it into a racial cause celebre.

For months, media showed Trayvon Martin as a sweet, innocent little boy with a cute red shirt and a cherubic smile.  But that is nothing like what George Zimmerman saw.  There were other pictures of Trayvon Martin readily available to media, which showed him as he looked on the day of the shooting; as George Zimmerman saw him.  Countless bloggers lifted them right off of Martin's twitter page.  But not media.  They were too busy building a racially incendiary case against Zimmerman to worry about that.

Then there were the fuzzy pictures shown by ABC News, which supposedly proved Zimmerman had no injuries - pictures that were completely disproven afterwards by photos taken at the shooting scene.   And there was NBC's doctored audio, which made Zimmerman sound like he was proactively profiling Martin by color...but left out the part where the dispatcher asked him for that description.  And there was the claim that Zimmerman used a racially offensive word to the dispatcher, which later was retracted because he didn't.  Put these together, and is there any doubt at all that media poured gasoline on the racial flames?  That they intentionally accelerated the race angle of this story?  I don't know whether it was because of the ridiculous level of partisanship in today's media, because they figured it would build a story that would attract viewers (race stories are good at doing that), or a combination thereof.  But either way it was disgusting and abhorrent.

While we're on the subject of disgusting and abhorrent, let's not leave out President Barack Obama's racially inflammatory comment that "If I had a son he'd look like Trayvon".  What was that supposed to mean, Mr. President?  That Trayvon Martin was more important to you because he was Black - the implication being that he would be less important if he were not?

How would you like it, Mr. President, if every time a Black murdered a White - which happens a great deal more than the other way around - Republicans got on TV and said "If President Obama had a son he would look like that murderer"?  Would you call them racist?   If so, what are you?  Aren't you supposed to be the President of the United States - all the United States?  If you want to be an al sharpton clone, resign and apply for a job at MSNBC - I'm sure you'll get one in no time

Florida State Attorney Angela Corey - whose charge of second degree murder was so outlandish that lawyers and commentators on both sides of the Trayvon Martin case thought it was ridiculous - should be held to account for her incompetence in doing so.

The prosecution team did what they could with an impossible case and a ridiculous over-charge of second degree murder - one that could, in my opinion, only have been won due to fear of racial strife if Zimmerman was found not guilty.

The aftermath?  Count on protests and marches for weeks, maybe months. Let's hope they do not turn violent.

I have no doubt that the race hustlers - and their many media suck-ups - are not through with this case.  They see it as a watershed event and they won't let go.  Count on them to demand that civil charges be filed against George Zimmerman.  And count on those charges to, in fact, be filed.

But even if I'm wrong about further charges against Zimmerman, he is a marked man.  At least for the near future, he will not be able to sleep with both eyes closed, or go about any normal everyday activity without looking over his shoulder to see who is going to exact revenge for Trayvon Martin.

Is it possible that, after some number of years, this will fade away?  As improbable as it seems right now, the answer is yes.  Remember Bernhard Goetz, the "subway vigilante" who shot four Black would-be muggers on a New York subway train in 1984?  That was every bit as much a national story as Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman.  But when was the last time you thought about him until I just brought his name up?  Many years, I'll bet.

Fading to obscurity can really happen.  But for Zimmerman, that is a long time off.  Maybe not long enough for some racially-charged lunatic to do something stupid and violent.   Certainly not if al sharpton and his likeminded racial flamethrowers have anything to say about it - which he, and they, are guaranteed to do (sharpton has already started).

Look at what happened at Freddy's Fashion Mart in Harlem, NY.  The same al sharpton who is leading the charge on Trayvon Martin, was doing the same at Freddy's - a White, Jewish-owned store engaged in a dispute with a Black sub-lessee.  Here, excerpted from an excellent expose of  who and what al sharpton is at discoverthenetworks.com, is a summary of the Freddy's Fashion Mart disaster:

Sharpton led his NAN (National Action Network) in a racially charged boycott against Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned business in Harlem. The boycott started when Freddy's owners announced that because they wanted to expand their own business, they would no longer sublet part of their store to a black-owned record shop. The street leader of the boycott, Morris Powell, was also the head of Sharpton's "Buy Black" Committee. Powell and his fellow protesters repeatedly and menacingly told passersby not to patronize the "crackers" and "the greedy Jew bastards [who are] killing our [black] people." Some boycotters openly threatened violence against whites and Jews--all under the watchful, approving eye of Sharpton, who referred to the proprietors of Freddy's as "white interlopers." The subsequent picketing became ever-more menacing in its tone until one of the participants eventually shot (non-fatally) four whites inside the store and then set the building on fire--killing seven employees, most of whom were Hispanics.

Media gave al sharpton a free pass on the Freddy's Fashion Mart murders, as they have on so many other things since then. And if they stay true to form, there will be a free pass this time as well.

Just as President Obama has gotten a free pass on his despicable racial comment about Trayvon Martin.

BOB W The same morons that cheered in he streets when OJ got aquitted are now starting fires, looting, etc. because they disagree with th verdict- the case was never racial. it was made racal by our biased media and was started by our insipid president when we made his stupid statement- " IF I HAD A SON HE WOULD HAVE LOOKED LIKE TRAYVON" Why does not NOBAMA speak out on the BLACK on BLACK killings in Chicago? Why? because he is too busy with JZ. (07/14/13)
