THE ZIMMERMAN TRIAL: THE FIRST TWO DEFENSE WITNESSES

Ken Berwitz

Judge Nelson insisted that the defense start at the end of Friday.

So what did the defense do?  It put out as its first two witnesses - and the last two jurrors would see before recessing until Monday - George Zimmerman's mother and his uncle -- both of whom are Peruvian, so they have dark-skin and speak with an accent.

Absolutely brilliant.

This means jurors will spend the weekend with their last image of George Zimmerman not as a White anglo, but as half non-White and half Latino.  It is true that they may have already known Mr. Zimmerman was of mixed ancestry.  But now they have seen and heard it first-hand, which is dramatically more powerful.

How important is this in a trial which has relentlessly been presented as Black vs. White?  How far does it go toward breaking through the racial divide media, and so-called Black "leaders", have erected from day one?  You tell me.

Obviously, Mr. Zimmerman's lawyers know how the game is played.

IS ANYONE TAKING A COUNT....

Ken Berwitz

.....of how many times Judge Debra Nelson has ruled in favor of the prosecution versus how many times she has ruled in favor of the defense?

So help me, she even upheld a protest after Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara offered condolences to Trayvon Martin's mother, telling him to restrict himself to answering questions.

The trial has been a farce from the git-go, and the judge is rapidly becoming a joke.

As a general rule, I usually assume that if there is no case for the prosecution, the defense prevails.  In this trial, I wonder if it will be enough to stave off a conviction.

THE JOBS REPORT

Ken Berwitz

The employment data was just released.

It is being reported that 195,000 jobs were created in June.  Sounds like a decent showing - not great by any means, just decent.

Except....

Excerpted from Jeff Cox's article at cnbc.com:

The numbers provided a mixed bag of news: While the actual employment level grew by 160,000, the unemployment ranks increased as well, by 17,000.

Those working part-time for economic reasons also jumped, growing 32,200 for the month.

That pushed a more encompassing count of unemployment that includes discouraged and underemployed from 13.8 percent to 14.3 percent.

Moreover, the quality of jobs was weak.

The bulk of the gains-75,000-came in the hospitality industry of bartending and waiters.

Professional and business services was the second-best growth area, adding 53,000 and retail grew 37,000.

Manufacturing jobs posted a decline of 6,000 for the month.

Excerpted from Tyler Durden's article at zerohedge.com:

As a reminder: jobs have quantity and quality components...how about the quality? In a word: not good. In June, the household survey reported that part-time jobs soared by 360,000 to 28,059,000 - an all time record high. Full time jobs? Down 240,000.  And looking back at the entire year, so far in 2013, just 130K Full-Time Jobs have been added, offset by a whopping 557K Part-Time jobs.

Still impressed by the jobs data?  I didn't think so.

As you can see, we are enduring a woefully inadequate "recovery".  And why should we expect more?  We have a woefully inadequate foreign policy and a woefully inadequate domestic policy as well.

If you want a surplus from this administration, count up the scandals - you know, the ones Barack Obama's Accomplice Media are so averse to pursuing.  Like the Green Scandal, the Operation Fast and Furious scandal, the Lie-RS Scandal, the snooping-on-media scandal, the Benghazi coverup scandal, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

No shortage there.  None at all.

Zeke .... .... What about the Labor Force Participation Rate ? ...... .... It measures people who have pounded on every door and website in sight, and then just stopped looking, cause there is nothing out there. ..... ...... These folk are NOT included in the Unemployment Rate (U-3) if they haven't been looking in the past month. ...... ..... The Unemployment Rate is decreasing because it doesn't count those who want to work, but can't find anything. (07/05/13)

IS GEORGE ZIMMERMAN LEADING A DOUBLE LIFE?

Ken Berwitz

Last night, a New York City Police Officer, 40 year old Jamil Sarwar, was shot in the leg while responding to a call in Brooklyn.  The bullet lodged in his thigh.  I am happy to report Officer Sarwar is expected to make a full recovery.

Today George Zimmerman's trial continues in Sanford, Florida.

Here is a picture of Officer Sarwar:

And here is a picture of George Zimmerman:

Is it just me, or do these two look very much alike?

I refuse to be fooled.  The only question is which flight he took to get from Brooklyn back to Sanford in time.

(God I hope you realize I'm not serious about this...).

THE ZIMMERMAN TRIAL

Ken Berwitz

So far this morning:

Trayvon Martin's mother - the one who is making a small fortune on her son's corpse (e.g. she copyrighted "I Am Trayvon" and "Justice For Trayvon") - has testified that the voice screaming for help is her son's.  No shock there.

Trayvon's brother, Jahvaris, also said it was Trayvon Martin...until cross-examination, when he was reminded that he said he didn't know who the voice belonged to when initially interviewed by police last year.  He then grudgingly admitted not knowing now as well.

When Zimmerman's attorney tried to introduce the initial interview, however, Judge Debra Nelson would not allow it, on the grounds that he was saying the same things both times.....while ignoring the fact that he only did so on the witness stand this morning because he was embarrassed into doing so.

Maybe it is my imagination, but Nelson seems to continually rule against Zimmerman.  This isn't 50-50 or anything close.  Am I right?  That's for you to decide.

Now the medical examiner is being cross-examined...and not only is maddenly nonresponsive to most of the defense's questions, but is doing his best Sgt. Schulz "I do not know, I saw nothing" routine, claiming he remembers nothing at all about the autopsy and will only acknowledge his written notes.  This guy sounds as slimy as an eel slithering through olive oil.

==============================================

UPDATE:  Incredibly, the medical examiner, Shiping Bao - who is coming across as a jerk and a half - started reading from his notes while testifying.  This makes them 100% discoverable, and Judge Nelson was forced to allow the prosecution to have a copy of them.

These notes cannot do any good for the prosecution, and are very likely to be extremely helpful, maybe even decisive, for the defense:  Zimmerman attorney Mark O'Mara, actually smiled when the notes became available to him.  No wonder Bao was visibly sweating on the stand.

He is the prosecution's last witness?  The last person it wants jurors to remember?  Holy you-know-what.

And this is before we get to the judge's instruction that the copies be destroyed afterwards, which based on what CNN analysts (and presumably the ones on other networks as well) assure us is ridiculous.

Can you spell  F I A S C O?

=========================================

FURTHER UPDATE:  Now Bao has told the court he met with the prosecutor yesterday...but claims not to remember whether he mentioned that his opinion had changed about how long Trayvon Martin was alive after being shot.  In other words, the medical examiner says he needs his notes to recall whether, one day ago, he told the prosecutor about an issue critical to the the case.

In my opinion, Shiping Bao is either full of crap, or the dumbest man on the planet.  And I don't get the sense that he is dumb.

Zeke ........ .... .... Incredible ! ! ! .... The lawyers are side barring with the judge --- The judge raised her right hand, as did the prosecutor. ..... ... She is requiring him to state something under oath. Under Oath ! ! .... despite him being an officer of the court. ..... ...... Rumor has it that the ME, Dr Bao was abducted by little green aliens, and won't testify any more. ..... .... (07/05/13)

Zeke ..... ...... The last few prosecution witnesses remind of the scene in Airplane -- where the seat mates commit suicide, rather than listen to the inane, boring life story of Ted Striker (Robert Hays) ..... (07/05/13)

THE ZIMMERMAN TRIAL: THE PROSECUTION RESTS

Ken Berwitz

The prosecution has rested...without even coming close to making a case for second degree murder.

The defense is moving for acquittal...which it will not get.

Given the time (4:30PM as I write this) I assume, therefore, that the trial will continue on Monday with the defense calling witnesses.

I doubt they will be any better for the defense than the ones the prosecution called.

=========================================

UPDATE:  Unbelievable.  4:57PM on Friday of July 4th weekend and instead of starting the defense on Monday, Judge Debra Nelson has insisted the defense begin its presentation.

Does she have a screw loose?

Zeke ..... ..... Remember, the defense team FINALLY gets to depose Benjamin Crump (the 'advisor' to the Martins, who has already gotten a 7 figure settlement from the Home Owners Association). ..... ...... The deposition will be at 6 pm Sunday. ..... .... Guaranteed, Crump will continue to drag his feet on this. .... .... (07/05/13)

PRESIDENTIAL DENUNCIATIONS: A QUESTION

Ken Berwitz

In 2009, Iranian protesters marched in the streets by the hundreds of thousands, intent on removing the illegitimately "elected" mahmoud ahmadinejad and replacing the country's Islamic rule with a form of real democracy.  President Obama had not one word to say in support of them, only that he wasn't going to get involved in another country's internal affairs.

Shortly thereafter, Israel announced it was building a couple of hundred residential housing units for Jews in eastern Jerusalem.  President Obama came down on the Jewish state like a ton of bricks.

Two years ago there were protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square against Hosni Mubarak, one of the only non-Israeli heads of state in the middle east willing to give the United States the time of day.  President Obama actively facilitated the deposing of Mubarak...which resulted in the election of mohamed morsi, a member of the Muslim brotherhood, which our own state department classifies as a terrorist organization.  President Obama then agreed to arm the morsi government with billions of dollars of tanks and other military equipment.

Over this time, Syria's dictator, bashir al-assad, fought a rebel uprising by killing tens of thousands of his own people (estimates currently are at about 90,000 dead).  When the rebels were simply anti-assad, President Obama stayed out of it.  But when they became infiltrated, then infested with, then overrun, with al-qaeda and similar organizations, President Obama shifted from neutrality to supporting the rebels.

Last week the now-terroristic rebels beheaded two people for being Christian, one of them a Catholic priest, while gleefully chanting allahu akbar.  President Obama has not issued any denunciation of that atrocity.

My question:  Whose side is our President on?

I used to ask that question rhetorically.  Now, increasingly, I ask it literally.

free` Whose side is our President on? --------------- Like most socialists/leftists any side that is against America. (07/05/13)

THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Ken Berwitz

Today's quote comes to us from Michael Rubin, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

Mr. Rubin joins with other middle east experts in expressing bafflement as to why Secretary of State John Kerry is ignoring the wildfires throughout that region to, instead, shuttle between Israel and Palestinian Arabs to resurrect peace negotiations which, in 47 years, have never gotten anywhere - and which haven't even existed for the past four years.

Here is what Mr. Rubin has to say:

"Kerry would have an easier time convincing Greenpeace to dine on whale steak and spotted owl than in brokering peace between Israel and Palestinians."

"Egypt is imploding, and Turkey is going south fast. Antagonism between Europe and America is at an all-time high. China is bullying U.S. allies in southeast Asia. And what is Kerry doing? Off tilting at windmills"

I couldn't agree more.

Maybe the real reason Kerry is doing this is, after 30 years in the senate with virtually no accomplishments of any kind (unless you consider countless speeches, most of them critical of the USA, as accomplishing something, that is) he is so used to flailing away at nothing to achieve nothing that this seems like a logical extension of his career.

I don't know if that's his reason...and, frankly, don't care.  I just know that he is engaged in what, at this point in time, is a wholly meaningless exercise in nothing.  (Hey, given that it's John Kerry, maybe we're better off for it.)

As for Mr. Rubin?  His comments are plain, blunt and honest.  This blog values all three. Therefore, Quote Of The Day Honors are his.

ADLEY MANSOUROWITZ?

Ken Berwitz

So help me, this is straight from Max Fisher's article in today's Washington Post:

IkhwanOnline, the official Web site of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, posted an article on Thursday asserting that the country's new interim president, Adly Mansour, is secretly Jewish. The article, since taken offline, suggested that Mansour was part of an American and Israeli conspiracy to install Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. official and  Egyptian opposition figure, as president.

Enjoy the absurdly humorous quality of this claim....because it may well be the last humor you see regarding Egypt for quite some time.
