THE NEW YORK TIMES: BORDERING ON FRAUD

Ken Berwitz

On Monday, 7 U.S. Marines were killed in a tragic training accident in Nevada.  .

Yesterday, seizing on this horrible tragedy as a cheap political opportunity, the execrable Senator harry reid (D-NV) made this statement on the floor of the senate:

As I indicated, it was quite a big explosion. We'll follow this news very closely. I will do whatever I can going forward to support the United States military and the families of the fallen Marines.

Mr. President, it's very important we continue training our military, so important. But one of the things in sequester is we cut back in training and maintenance. That's the way sequester was written. Now, the bill that's on the floor, we hope to pass today helps that a little bit. At least in the next six months, it allows the military some degree of ability to move things around a little bit. Flexibility, we call it, and that's good. But we have to be very vigilant. This sequester should go away. We have cut already huge amounts of money in deficit reduction. It's just not appropriate, Mr. President, that our military can't train and do the maintenance necessary.

These men and women, our Marines were training there in Hawthorne. And with this sequester, it's going to cut back this stuff. I just hope everyone understands the sacrifices made by our military. They are significant, being away from home, away from families, away from their country.

How obvious was reid?

Enough so that a Marine spokesperson referred to it as "political posturing on the backs of these dead marines".  If you ask me, the spokesperson was too kind.

So how did the New York Times report this?

It put the story itself not on the first page, but on page A14 - at the bottom.  Nowhere near major-story status.

And the one and only mention of harry reid was at the very end of the story.  In its entirety:

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, announced news of the accident on Tuesday morning on the Senate floor.  "My heart goes out to the families of those who lost their lives," he said.  "And my sympathies are with their fellow Marines, who are also grieving this loss."

Not one word reported about reid's disgusting attempt to tie this fatal accident to sequester politics.  If you rely on the New York Times to be informed, therefore, you don't have the slightest idea he ever said it.

To me, that is more than propaganda disguised as journalism.  It borders on outright fraud.

=====================================================

UPDATE:  Just in case you think the Times is the only one, here is how usnews.nbcnews.com reported reid's comments:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who represents Nevada, offered condolences on the Senate floor.

That's it.  Not another word. Not so much as a hint that he tied the marines' deaths to the sequester.

In other words, keep 'em ignorant, and you own 'em.

And, yes, these are the same "journalists" who squeal like stuck pigs if you call them biased.

THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Ken Berwitz

Today's quote of the day comes from the very quotable - and very angry (with complete justification) Mark Levin.

Here is Mr. Levin's reaction to the sick, disgusting suggestion by harry reid that the sequester had something to do with Monday's accident which claimed the lives of those 7 marines - and a marine spokesperson's statement that reid's vile comment was pure political posturing on the backs of these dead Marines.:

"That's exactly what it was, and it was grotesque. And Harry Reid, you're the lowest of the low-lives, you know that?  You really are at the bottom of the sewer, all the time on every issue - whether it's accusing Mitt Romney of not filing taxes. You are just a very ill human being. And the fact that you're the Senate majority leader says an awful lot about the Democrats in the Senate. The American people deserve better than this miscreant - we do.  We deserve better than this man. He is a vicious stupid man. Somehow out of Searchlight, Nev., he has acquired tens of millions of dollars, as he lives on the penthouse floor in the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C. Somehow, somehow this low I.Q., no-talent hack politician has become the Senate majority leader and an extremely wealthy man.

"Now look at the slime that comes out of his mouth.  Seven dead Marines - somebody's sons, somebody's fathers, somebody's brothers - seven dead Marines, and this jerk goes to the Senate floor and he has to talk about the sequester, which has nothing to do with it. Now, did a single Republican go to the Senate floor and condemn this? Well if they did, I haven't heard about it, and they're welcome to call the program and tell us, because this man needs to be condemned on the Senate floor in public for the implication that he drew - and he clearly drew it on the Senate floor today. Our men and women in uniform - they're not there as political props."

Not only is Mark Levin 100% correct about reid, but if no Senator has spoken out about his verbal vomit - Republicans or Democrats, but especially Republicans because they don't have to worry about damaging one of their leaders - he is every bit as correct about them as well.

It is hard to find the words to condemn harry reid strongly enough.  But Mr. Levin has gone a long way toward doing so.  And, for good measure, he has thrown in a question about reid's personal wealth that anyone interested in senate ethics should have been asking for years (maybe they don't because the words "senate" and "ethics" are so removed from one another).

Thank you, Mark.  And please do not stop.  Not for a second.

A FEW QUESTIONS ABOUT PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ISRAEL TRIP

Ken Berwitz

Regarding President Obama's Israel trip.....have any of our wonderful "neutral" media asked for information on:

-How large is President Obama's entourage?

-Are there unnecessary people included in the entourage?

-If so, how many?

-How much do the unnecessary people cost?

-How many White House tours, Easter egg rolls - and, (for harry reid) how much military maintenance - the additional cost would have paid for?

I bet the answer to every one of those question is "no".  Don't you?

WHY IS PRESIDENT OBAMA IN ISRAEL?

Ken Berwitz

There are many different opinions about President Obama's trip to Israel - which is taking place over 4 years since he took office, and only after he has won re-election.

One of the most interesting comes to us from the excellent Jerusalem Post columnist, Caroline Glick, in the form of a question:

It is possible that Obama is coming here in order to build up pro-Israel bonafides. But why would he bother? Obama won his reelection bid with the support of the overwhelming majority of American Jews. Their support vindicated his hostility toward Israel in his first term. He has nothing to prove.

Regarding her opinion of the state of mind Mr. Obama brings to Israel, here are a few more excerpts:

The only revealing aspect of Obama's itinerary is his decision to on the one hand bypass Israel's elected representatives by spurning the invitation to speak before the Knesset; and on the other hand to address a handpicked audience of university students - an audience grossly overpopulated by unelectable, radical leftists.

In the past, US presidents have spoken before audiences of Israeli leftists in order to elevate and empower the political Left against the Right. But this is the first time that a US president has spurned not only the elected Right, but elected leftist politicians as well, by failing to speak to the Knesset, while actively courting the unelectable radical Left through his talk to a university audience.

So what does Obama seek to achieve with this novel practice? Clearly he is not attempting to use the opportunity of addressing this audience to express contrition for his first term's policies. In his interview with Channel 2, Obama spoke of the instability on Israel's borders - but never mentioned the key role he played in overthrowing Mubarak and empowering the Muslim Brotherhood, thus emptying of meaning Israel's peace treaty with the most populous Arab state.

He never mentioned that his feckless handling of Syria's civil war ensured that the moderate opposition forces would be eclipsed by radical Islamists affiliated with al-Qaida, as has happened, or expressed concern that al-Qaida forces are now deployed along Syria's border with Israel, and that there is a real and rising danger that Syria's arsenals of chemical and biological weapons, as well as its ballistic missiles, will fall into their hands. Indeed, Tuesday it was reported that the al-Qaida infiltrated opposition attacked regime forces with chemical weapons.

Obama will not use his speech before Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's most outspoken critics to express remorse over the hostility with which he treated Israel's leader for the past four years. He will not admit that his decision to coerce Israel into suspending Jewish property rights in Judea and Samaria in his first term gave the PLO justification for refusing to meet with or negotiate with the Israeli government.

No speech before the Knesset - Israel's equivalent of congress.  No visit to the Temple Mount.  But an ego-stroking rah-rah session with university leftists who probably have supported every criticism Mr. Obama has made about Israeli policy for the past four years (try and find a forum - university or otherwise - for similar dissent in any of Israel's neighboring countries or the so-called "Palestinian Territories.  I dare you).

Does Ms. Glick have a point?  You tell me.

Zeke .... ..... Bibi won't get a dinner invitation this time, either. ..... ..... Mr. Obama is campaigning for his next job -- Prime Minister of Israel . . . . Israelis tend to be insightful about politics -- Barry's charm offensive might fall flat. .... Interesting that he came all the way to the Middle East to snub Israel's parliament, and seek out a hard left audience. (town hall meeting ? ? ) (03/20/13)

BARACK OBAMA'S 1967 ISRAEL

Ken Berwitz

This one is for the Lost Tribe - the ones who support Israel but voted for Obama anyway.

Here, courtesy of Washington Free Beacon (WFB) , is the map of Israel according to a video put out by the administration just before his trip there:

As WFB notes:

The map of Israel, displayed repeatedly during the video, shows the Golan Heights, Jerusalem, northern Israel, and areas surrounding what is currently the West Bank as non-Israeli territory. The Golan Heights is shown as part of Syria; Jerusalem is shown as part of the West Bank; and northern Israel is shown as part of Lebanon.

Translation:  the Obama administration has sandbagged Israel by - without any apparent prior warning - blithely eliminating every annexed, and disputed inch of post-1967 land.

Please remember that doing so defines Israel as having the exact same borders which Prime Minister Netanyahu told President Obama, to his face, were indefensible and that Israel would not go back to them.

Can the Lost Tribers possibly be ok with this?  Or, said differently, how many times in how many ways do Barack Obama and his people have to back-slap Israel before they get it?

The answer, pathetically enough, is probably that most Lost Tribers will concoct some half-baked rationale for why this somehow is acceptable.

Old habits die hard - even the habit of bending over and spreading 'em.  And Lost Tribers certainly have plenty of experience with that, don't they?

SEQUESTER WATCH

Ken  Berwitz

It is day 20 of the sequester.

Do you feel any different?  Do you think anything has changed?  Do you think the country has gone to hell in a handbasket?

No?  Me neither.

But, no matter how many times the fraudulent claims of this administration have been exposed, it keeps trying to convince us the sequester is wreaking havoc on our lives.

Want an example?  Ok.  Look at this sign, which has materialized at Miami International Airport:

That's nice.  Now, what about this - excerpted from Jim Geraghty's blog at nationalreview.com?

NO ONE HAS BEEN FURLOUGHED YET.

For a short furlough of a covered employee, the law (5 U.S.C. 7513) gives a covered employee the following rights:

At least 30 calendar days advance written notice by the agency stating the specific reasons for the proposed action. (Typically, the reasons for the action would involve a lack of work or funds.) The 30 calendar day period begins upon an employee's receipt of the written notice. Therefore, agencies should plan accordingly to allow time for mailing the notice when hand-delivery is not possible.

As you know, it has been 19 days since the sequestration was announced.

Translation:  the sign is a complete lie.

And just in case the liars within this administration "prove" that the sequester has caused long-wait problems at Miami International, read this Mark Caputo's article for the Miami Herald - published February 20 - over a week BEFORE the sequester took effect:

For a picture of the nation's border struggles, look at the long lines and understaffed international-passenger checkpoints at Miami International Airport.

Up to 1,000 passengers in a single day have missed connecting flights at the airport - the busiest in the nation for international flights - because they're held up at the Customs and Border Protection facility.

So if the lines are long and the personnel is short at Miami International, and they try to tell you it is because of the sequester.....they are lying.

Do these people ever do anything else?

President Obama desperately needs a crisis to "prove" he was right about what horrible consequences would come down on us if there were forced cuts in our impossibly bloated deficit spending.  And, by God, he is going to come up with one, even if he has to create the crisis out of thin air - while hoping you are "low information" enough to be convinced it is real.

But in the absence of any such real crisis, his people are busily inventing fantasy-problems - like the one at Miami Internatinoal Airport.  Think of it as a test to see just how dumb, and/or how unconditionally committed to Obama & Co., you are.

Another installment of sequester watch tomorrow.
