LIVING IN A DREAM WURTZEL

Ken Berwitz

Elizabeth Wurtzel is the best-selling author of Prozac Nation, which was first published in 1994.  In it, she talked very candidly of her bouts with clinical depression and, on a more general level, how completely screwed up her life was.

I wish Ms. Wurtzel perfect mental health for the rest of her life -- which, of course, would entail thinking rationally.  And, to this end, I am hoping that she might start by rethinking the idiotic op-ed page commentary she wrote for today's Wall Street Journal, titled "Obama's Other Radical Friends".

As I read it, I kept waiting for her to lower the boom on william ayers and bernardine dohrn, two admitted domestic terrorists who escaped jail only because of mistakes and improper actions by the authorities, certainly not because they were innocent of the bombings they perpetrated.  To this day, both are proud that they bombed government and corporate targets in the USA and have said so.

But Ms. Wurtzel didn't lower any boom at all.  Her commentary about these two, especially dohrn, was outlandishly bizarre.  And it ended with two paragraphs that, literally, left me in amazed disbelief.

I've already given you the link to Ms. Wurtzel's entire article, but here are a few relevant excerpts, so your jaw can get some dropping exercise:

When I was 15, I read an article in Rolling Stone about the Weather Underground and became fascinated with Bernardine Dohrn. As a leader of the militant arm of Students for a Democratic Society, she was renowned for her beauty and daring, for her revolutionary rhetoric, and for an FBI 10 Most Wanted poster that was pinup worthy.

When she first showed up in New York City, wearing a tight miniskirt and Italian leather boots, Bernardine she became quickly known on a first-name basis started a craze among men in the antiwar movement. This crafty graduate of the University of Chicago Law School sounded like a kick.

Apparently, back when he was running for state senate, Barack Obama had fund-raising events at the home of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn, and there's been some press about the senator's friendship with this controversial Weathercouple. Many reporters are well aware, even though Mr. Obama has described his connection to Ayers and Dohrn as "flimsy," that the senator's relationship with his radical Hyde Park neighbors is actually quite warm, even close.

In a way, the public is saying that we don't want the country erupting into a divisiveness akin to what created the '60s scene, the atmosphere of the Weather Underground. Even Jeremiah Wright, an embarrassing pastor who would probably have brought down a less-deft political prestidigator, will not do in Barack Obama. The Reverend rants and raves. It's a mess. But Mr. Obama's campaign will carry on.

As for Mr. Obama's friends, the Weathercouple: By all accounts, Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers are unfathomably charming, brilliant and comely people, absolutely irresistible. Everybody who meets them is taken and forgets what they should know.

Mr. Obama expects us all to understand this, because we understand everything else. He is doing something most unusual: He's acting as if the American people are thinking with their brains. He's giving all of us a lot of credit. Could it be that we deserve it?.

Is Ms Wurtzel in love with berardine dohrn?  It sure seems that way.

Is she troubled in the least by the fact that both ayers and dohrn remain 100% unrepentant about their bombing years, still make it plain they hate the USA with a passion and, in ayers' case, even wish they had wreaked more damage and chaos than they did?   Not hardly.

Then she tells us that -- "by all accounts Bernardine Dohrn and Bill Ayers are unfathomably charming, brilliant and comely people, absolutely irresistable"???

Well, how's by your account?  Do you think of william ayers and bernardine dohrn, these two hate-filled pigs, as unfathomably charming, brilliant and comely people or as absolutely irrestistable?  I can assure you I don't.

And Ms. Wurtzel finishes up by informing us that if we think these people aren't just wonderful in every way we are not using our brains?  It doesn't get loonier than that.

Look, I'm no expert on clinical depression and other people's screwed up lives.  But maybe Elizabeth Wurtzel needs more help.

Lots and lots and lots more of it.

OBAMA: HOPES ON THE ROPES?

Ken Berwitz

Barack Obama is the guy who came from nowhere to overwhelm voters and sprint past Hillary Clinton.  But now, he may be moving just as fast in underwhelming them and falling backwards.

Why?  The reasons include jeremiah wright.  The San Francisco comments about small town Americans clinging to guns and religion out of bitterness and frustration.  Michelle Obama letting us know that there was nothing to be proud of in this country throughout her adult life until her husband's campaign.  His association with domestic terrorists william ayers and bernardine dohrn.  Et cetera.  Every one of these is a punch right in Obama's labonza.  And those punches are taking an increasingly heavy toll among voters.

Let me show you an excerpt from today's Associated Press article which I found on MSNBC/s web page (yes, it really must be serious if The AP would publish it and MSNBC, which adores Obama, would run the story).

You can read the entire article by clicking here).  And if you do, you will see is a strong assurance that Barack Obama is going to be the Democratic presidential nominee -- unless you happen to read as far as the 12th paragraph.  If you do that, you will find the following:

A poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press showed Clinton's lead over Obama nationally among whites who did not attend college had increased from 10 points in March to 40 points at the end of April.

That voting bloc played heavily in Clinton's substantial win last week in Pennsylvania and was likely to be just as critical Tuesday, when voters cast ballots in Indiana. Pre-vote surveys there showed the outcome was a toss-up.

Slipping ratings
A second poll released Thursday carried more potential bad news for Obama, this in North Carolina, which votes the same day as Indiana. The Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. survey for two television stations in the state showed Obama's double-digit lead had slipped to just seven points, 49-42.

Nationwide, the Pew poll showed, Democratic voters now are about evenly divided, with Obama holding a statistically insignificant 47-45 margin. In late March he was up 10 points, 49-39.

The latest Gallup tracking survey had Clinton leading 49-45, after a week of showing them nearly even. Obama held a 10-percentage point margin going into Pennsylvania.

Ok, you're Barack Obama.  You know where these polls are going.  So how sure are you that your nomination is in the bag?  Not very, I would think.

What the AP does not mention in its article is that, while a large number of super-delegates may be committed to Barack Obama at this point in time, they can switch their allegiance to Hillary Clinton in two seconds flat if they care to.

What if Ms. Clinton beats Obama in Indiana?  What if she runs competitively against him in North Carolina, despite its large Black population and Obama's track record of getting almost 90% Black support in the previous primaries?  Do you have any doubt at all that a large number of super-delegates who are currently committed to Obama will be rethinking their decision?  I sure don't.

It ain't over yet.
